Stuck Radiator Valve Pin? How to Free a TRV

A thermostatic radiator valve can stick shut after months without use, leaving one radiator cold while the rest of the heating works. This guide explains how to check the valve pin, free it without damaging the valve, and recognise signs that the problem lies elsewhere.

How a thermostatic radiator valve works

A thermostatic radiator valve, usually shortened to TRV, controls the flow of hot water into an individual radiator. The numbered head is not a tap in the usual sense. Inside it is a temperature-sensitive element, commonly a wax capsule, that expands as the room warms. That movement presses down on a small metal pin in the valve body and reduces the water flow. When the room cools, the element contracts, the pin rises again and more hot water can enter the radiator.

The pin travels only a few millimetres. It is spring-loaded and should move down smoothly under firm finger pressure, then return by itself when released. Because the movement is small, a pin can look fixed even when it is operating normally. The useful test is whether it depresses slightly and springs back, not whether it can be pulled a long way out of the valve.

Sticking is especially common when heating has been off through summer. A TRV left in the closed or low position holds the pin down for a long period. Deposits, dried residue or a tight seal can then prevent the spring from lifting it when the heating is used again. The valve head may turn normally, but the pin beneath it remains shut and the radiator receives little or no hot water.

Opening TRVs fully while the heating is off for summer can reduce seasonal sticking by leaving the pin raised rather than compressed.

How to tell whether the radiator valve pin is stuck

The classic pattern is one radiator staying cold while other radiators warm normally and the heating is definitely on. The affected radiator may be cold from top to bottom because no hot water is entering it. Turning the TRV from low to high makes no difference. That pattern makes a closed or stuck valve worth checking, although it does not prove the pin is the cause.

First make sure the room is genuinely cool enough for the TRV to call for heat. A valve near a warm appliance, heavy curtain or direct sunlight can sense a higher temperature than the rest of the room. Turn the head to its highest setting, make sure the lockshield valve at the other end has not been closed, and give the system time to circulate. Do not compare the radiator immediately after the heating starts.

Only inspect the pin when the valve has a removable thermostatic head. The pin is beneath the plastic or metal control head, not beneath a large plumbing nut. If you are uncertain which part releases the head, stop. Loosening the valve body or a pipe connection can release heating water and turn a simple check into a leak.

Before you remove the TRV head

Switch the heating off and let the radiator cool enough to work around safely. Put an old towel beneath the valve as a precaution and keep electrical items away from the area. You are not draining the radiator for this check, and removing the control head alone should not release water. Any existing moisture or corrosion around the valve should be treated as a warning to call a plumber rather than disturb it.

Turn the TRV head to its highest setting. Depending on the design, the head may be held by a knurled collar, a small retaining ring or a clip. Release only that head fixing and lift the head away. Do not undo the hexagonal compression nuts joining the valve to the radiator or pipe. Some heads need a particular release method, so use the valve maker's instructions if the fitting is unfamiliar.

Once the head is off, look for the short metal pin. Check for bending, heavy corrosion, staining or seepage. Leave a bent, wet or badly corroded valve alone and arrange a repair.

How to free a stuck radiator valve pin safely

Start with the least force possible. Protect your finger with a folded cloth and press the top of the pin straight down. A working pin should move slightly and spring back. Keep your face away from the valve as you test it. If it moves freely several times, refit the head, turn it high and test the radiator after restarting the heating.

If the pin will not move, apply a small amount of suitable penetrating lubricant around the base of the pin, avoiding carpets and finished surfaces. Allow it time to work. Then press the pin vertically again. Gentle repeated pressure is safer than one hard push. The aim is to restore the pin's tiny in-and-out movement, not to drive it into the valve.

If finger pressure is not enough, padded pliers can be used with great care. Wrap the jaws or the pin so the metal is not scored. Grip lightly and work the pin with very small vertical movements. Do not twist it, bend it sideways or pull it upwards beyond its normal resting point. Modest force matters because the pin is connected to small internal parts and seals.

Never hit the pin with a hammer or another tool. A sharp impact can bend the pin, damage the seal or force internal parts out of position. Do not use grips on an unprotected pin, and do not keep escalating force when it refuses to move. A valve body costs far more trouble once it leaks than a planned plumber visit before it is damaged.

When the pin moves down and returns reliably, wipe away excess lubricant and refit the thermostatic head securely. Turn it to maximum, restart the heating and allow time for hot water to circulate. Check the valve for moisture while the system warms. If the radiator heats, return the head to the setting you normally use rather than leaving it permanently at maximum.

What to do if the pin comes out or the valve starts leaking

Stop if the pin pulls out. Do not run the heating to see what happens and do not try to force the loose pin back with a hammer. Hold a cloth around the valve if there is a small seep, switch off the heating and call a plumber. The internal seal or retaining parts may have been disturbed, and the valve may need repair or replacement.

For a persistent drip, place a container and towels beneath the valve, keep water away from electrics and monitor the level. If water is escaping quickly, turn off the heating and use the appropriate isolation points only if you already know them. Heating circuits vary, so guessing at valves can make the situation worse. Call for urgent plumbing help when you cannot contain the leak safely.

If the spindle seeps after moving, do not tighten every visible nut. Valve designs differ, and over-tightening can damage a seal or older fitting. Arrange an inspection.

When the problem is not the TRV

A cold radiator does not automatically mean a stuck radiator valve pin. If the pin moves and springs back but the radiator stays cold, first check that the valve at the other end has not been closed. That lockshield valve controls the return flow and is normally adjusted during balancing. Avoid changing it at random because its position affects how water is shared across the whole heating circuit.

Balancing is likely to matter when radiators near the heat source become hot quickly while distant ones warm slowly or not at all. The system may be sending too much flow through the easiest routes. Correct balancing involves measured, small adjustments across several radiators, not simply opening every valve fully. Recording each starting position is sensible if you already understand the process, otherwise ask a plumber.

Trapped air often produces a cold top and a warmer bottom, sometimes with gurgling. Bleeding may help, but check the correct procedure for your system and avoid opening a bleed screw too far. Repeated air can indicate another problem. A radiator that is warm at the top but cold across the bottom may contain sludge or other deposits that restrict circulation.

Several cold radiators, slow heating throughout the house or repeated cold spots point towards circulation rather than one local valve. Possible causes include poor balancing, deposits, a pump or another water-side fault. Treating one TRV will not solve a system-wide flow problem. Note which radiators heat first, which stay cold and whether the pattern changes when other TRVs are closed, then give that information to a plumber.

Pipework can also be airlocked after draining or alterations. Do not loosen pipe joints to release air because heating water can be hot, dirty and difficult to stop.

When to call a plumber

Call a plumber if the valve is leaking, heavily corroded, bent or still immovable after gentle attempts. You should also call if the pin comes out, the head fixing is unclear, the radiator connections move when touched, or you are not confident distinguishing the removable head from a water-bearing joint. Stopping early protects the valve, floor and heating system.
